In the introductory footnote of The High Nun Shi Xing, it is noted that High Nun Xing naturally had two grandmothers on her paternal and mother sides who were matched down to husbands of only aristocratic ranks. This was contrary to the common custom in which women often married men of higher social, financial, or educational status.
During the inhumane “one-child policy per couple,” initiated by Ma under Mao, Xing vowed to become a nun not dating, marriage, and having biological child of her own. She made this decision to help prevent her sister-in-law’s second pregnancy from being forcibly aborted by the brutal mob enforcers of Ma's policy.
The monastic master accepted Xing as a nun and revised her name by adding her other grandmother’s name, making it “Shi Xing Shen Chow.” Coincidentally, Xing is also a descendant of the ancient literati Shen Chow; written in English name order, the ancient scholar’s name would be “Chow Shen.”
The inhumane policy began in the 1970s. Through the combined efforts of Xing and her parents, along with the Miller couple Larry & Emily, later, their sons, the brutal policy was ultimately brought to an end in 2005.
